He also has training in teaching relaxation techniques and anger management skills including deep breathing and systematic desensitization. Dr. Spatafora’s counseling approach emphasizes how all individuals have the capability to live life authentically and with reduced stress. His goal is to help patients utilize their strengths to achieve positive self-change and growth through the many transitions in life.
When people experience trauma or life stressors, it is not uncommon to become overwhelmed with emotions. My passion is to be a source of support and to help facilitate healing in those who are feeling lost, lonely, or needing some support in life. I collaborate with my adult clients to find healthy perceptions of themselves, explore their culture and intersectionality, and find liberation from their trauma by gently and curiously exploring their experiences. We will work together to reach goals, recognize core beliefs, and reflect on life experiences as early as childhood. My goal is for my clients to know themselves as peaceful, complete, capable, whole, and safe.
I take a holistic approach to therapy, meaning that I look at many aspects of my client as unique individuals, as well as the many aspects of their lives. I work with clients who seek therapy for a range of reasons including but not limited to: depression, anxiety, trauma, spirituality, family dynamics/family of origin issues, religious trauma, grief, life transitions, self-esteem/self-worth, LGBTQIA+ issues, racial and cultural trauma, harm reduction/moderation, mindfulness and more.In my therapeutic approach, I integrate many modalities ranging from Person-Centered therapy, CBT, DBT, Narrative therapy, Feminist and Multicultural theories, Psychodynamic, Adlerian therapy and more. I believe that what is good for the client, is good in therapy!
I approach therapeutic relationships by meeting clients where they are at, with trust, empathy, positive regard, and gentle challenging of unhealthy belief systems. I use humor and honesty to connect with my clients and take pride in showing up as my authentic self with my clients.
To engage in the work of psychotherapy is a profound act of courage. It requires risk, persistence, and often the willingness to look at very painful experiences. To seek positive change in one's life is a mark of health and strength. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with New Insights Behavioral Health Services. I have 21 years of specialized experience providing therapy in English and Spanish to adolescents and adults. I utilize evidence-based therapies in my practice, focusing on issues that include anxiety, depression, trauma, and marital/ relationship concerns.
I have an ability to engage interactively with clients, to be genuinely curious about their life stories. I strive to identify and build on healthy client choices and behavior, and to recognize what clients are doing right, while also looking carefully at areas that are no longer serving them well, and that they are ready to change.
My role is to work together with clients to name and move effectively toward the change they seek. I believe the work of growth requires increasing awareness, and includes taking personal responsibility for an expanded set of options. Awareness of options decreases a sense of victimhood. Clients are almost always more powerful than they think.
In addition to my professional training, I bring to my work the perspective of my specific and extensive life experience. I lived and worked for several years in Latin America, in both rural and urban settings. I speak Spanish, and I have substantial first-hand experience with cross-cultural issues. I have grown through the rigorous demands of both marriage and divorce, and have profited immeasurably from the privilege of parenting two children, including a child with special developmental needs.
I am attuned to the unique concerns of gay, lesbian and bisexual clients, and to those questioning their sexuality or their spirituality. I hope that my background provides a point of connection with many kinds of people. I am energized by meeting new potential clients, and I look forward to building an effective clinical relationship with each person who chooses to walk through my door.
